Sensereo, a startup developing next-generation smart safety and sensing devices, has launched a new Trade In Program for expired Sensereo products. The initiative helps customers exchange old smoke alarms for new units while ensuring expired devices are recycled responsibly in line with EU environmental standards.

“Creating intelligent safety devices also means taking responsibility for their environmental impact,” said Roy Chen, Founder & CEO of Sensereo. “Through our Trade In Program, customers can replace their devices while ensuring expired units are reclaimed and recycled according to environmental standards.”

Sensereo Trade In Program

As part of their commitment to sustainability, Sensereo offers a Trade In Program for expired smoke alarms. Due to safety and regulatory requirements, the main battery of a smoke alarm, which powers the core sensing and alarm functions, is non-removable. To reduce electronic waste, Sensereo encourages users to return expired devices for proper recycling and reuse of materials.

Customers who have registered their product warranty are eligible for a 40% discount on a replacement unit when they trade in their expired Sensereo device. Returned units are processed through certified recycling partners to ensure compliance with environmental and safety standards.

Through this program, Sensereo extends product responsibility beyond the point of sale, helping to close the loop between product use, recovery, and sustainable manufacturing.

Protecting Homes and the Planet

Sensereo’s Trade In Program is part of its broader commitment to sustainability and compliance with European Union environmental directives:

RoHS Directive (2011/65/EU)
All electronic components comply with the EU RoHS Directive, restricting hazardous substances such as lead, cadmium, and mercury. Every supplier provides a formal RoHS Declaration of Conformity to ensure full traceability across the supply chain.

WEEE Directive (2012/19/EU)
Sensereo products are designed and labeled in accordance with the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive, ensuring proper collection and recycling of expired devices. The Trade In Program extends WEEE compliance by actively encouraging customers to return expired products for certified recycling.

Battery Directive (2006/66/EC, updated 2023/1542/EU)
Sensereo’s smoke alarms feature a non-removable main battery (for safety) and a replaceable communication-module battery. Both are managed under EU battery labeling, collection, and recycling rules. Sensereo is also registered as a battery producer in applicable markets.

Ecodesign Directive (2009/125/EC)
While smoke alarms are not subject to mandatory Ecodesign energy labeling, Sensereo follows the directive’s principles by using ultra-low-power electronics and a 7-year sealed battery design to minimize energy use and waste.

Sustainable Materials and Packaging
All packaging materials are FSC-certified, sourced from responsibly managed forests. Sensereo also complies with REACH (EC 1907/2006) to ensure all materials are safe for both users and the environment.
