The 5-step autumn smoke alarm check

Press the test button. Fire services recommend testing at least once a month.

Check the date on the base. Replace any alarm that has passed its marked date, or if you don’t know how old it is.

Check the batteries. If your alarm uses replaceable batteries, autumn is an easy time to swap them.

Clean it gently. Dust can affect the sensor. Use a soft brush or the soft attachment on your vacuum.

Listen from your bedroom. Ask someone to test the alarm downstairs while you stand upstairs with the door closed. If you can barely hear it, your alarms need to work together.

No smart home hub? Interlink and phone alerts need a Matter-compatible Thread border router, such as HomePod, Apple TV or a SmartThings Hub. Without one, MS-1 Interlink still works as a reliable standalone smoke alarm, and you can add a hub later.

FAQs
Do I need a hub? Interlink and phone alerts need a Matter-compatible Thread border router, such as HomePod, Apple TV or a SmartThings Hub. Without one, each alarm works on its own.
Will MS-1 Interlink link with the original MS-1? No. They can’t interlink, but both can sit in the same smart home app and Thread network.
What should I do when the alarms go off? Silencing the linked alarms doesn’t silence the one that first detected smoke. Find that alarm first and check the room.
Does the offer work with any brand? Yes. Any brand of smoke alarm qualifies, and you don’t need to return it.
When does the offer end? Submit the form by 15 October 2026. Your code is valid until 31 October 2026.
